Online Resources

Really, there's probably an app for that... I know that tuners, metronomes, and more are available in Apple and other app stores for smartphones.

Music Dictionary

This dictionary is so complete that when I tried to copy some of it into MSWord, the letter "A" took 24 pages.

Metronome

An online metronome ideal for quick and easy use while practicing music. This music tool helps with your tempo selections and maintaining a steady beat.

Tuner (requires microphone)

We work very hard on training by ear and not sight, but a tuner is still a valuable tool--especially when it is used to work on producing a steady tone and pitch. There are a number of downloadable tuners, and this one appears to be one of the best. All that I have found (including this one) require purchase for continued use.

Web 2.0

EJamming

EJamming is online musical collaboration in its highest form. Musicians from all over the world can connect via the Internet and perform together on their own instruments in real time. Jam sessions can be open or private, allowing a small ensemble to do an interactive, real-time rehearsal or recordable performance without even needing to be in the same country! Imagine being able to combine several small ensembles at different schools into one large concert band without the need for transportation! An incredibly innovative and intriguing application to be sure, but requires a solid broadband Internet connection and a low-latency audio interface for best results. The EJamming service is free while in public beta.

StarPlay

StarPlay is an interactive music practice and assessment system in the same vein as SmartMusic but with a higher degree of interactivity and media richness. Video accompaniments help the students learn and perform the music, allowing the students to perform in virtual concerts with major artists and ensembles. It is now an official Sibelius product and will read and assess Sibelius format music files. See the site for a demo video of what the system can do. Music to use with the system is purchased on a per-title basis.

Interactive Composer Database

The Interactive Composer Database is a java based music history research tool for students to use that allows them to visually see the historical and geographical contexts surrounding history's most famous musical composers. Interactive timelines, maps, and dynamic research results help students find free, high quality sources for information without giving them the answers outright. Links to digitized books and scores from Project Guttenberg and other sources are also provided for most composers.
